Double Cleansing:
Do You Actually Need It?

Sorme Shadravan Sorme Shadravan — @sormesaskincare

Quick Summary

Double cleansing isn't essential for everyone — but if you wear water-resistant SPF, long-wear makeup, or have oily skin, it makes a real difference. The method originated from Japanese and Korean routines.

Where Did It Come From?

Double cleansing comes from Japanese and Korean skincare routines. The principle is simple: first use an oil-based cleanser to dissolve makeup, sunscreen, and oily dirt. Then use a gentle water-based cleanser to fully cleanse the skin.

The logic behind this method is straightforward: "like dissolves like." High-SPF sunscreens, long-wear foundations, and eyeshadows usually aren't fully removed by a single standard cleanser alone.

Who Needs It?

Highly recommended for:

  • People using water-resistant sunscreen
  • Those applying full makeup
  • Very oily skin types
  • Those living in polluted environments
  • Days you've been outdoors

May not be necessary if:

  • — You applied light sunscreen without makeup
  • — You had a low-key day at home
  • — You have very sensitive and dry skin
  • — A strong cleanser is sufficient for you

Important note: Modern cleansers are so advanced that for many people, single-step cleansing is sufficient. You don't need to do double cleansing every day — only when it's truly necessary.

How to Do It Correctly

1
Apply oil cleanser to dry skin

Apply oil, balm, or oil-based micellar to dry skin and massage gently with circular motions for 30–45 seconds. Don't add water yet — it needs to be on dry skin to dissolve oils effectively.

2
Rinse or wipe with soft cloth

Rinse with warm water or wipe clean with a soft microfiber cloth. Makeup and sunscreen should be fully dissolved by now.

3
Apply gentle cleanser to damp skin

Apply a gentle water-based cleanser like Vichy Normaderm or Laminin Gel to slightly damp skin and create a light lather. This step removes remaining oil, skin's natural oils, and water-soluble dirt.

4
Final rinse and dry gently

Rinse with cool or lukewarm water. Pat dry gently with a clean towel — don't rub or tug at skin.

Is Washing Twice with Regular Cleanser the Same?

Not exactly. Oil-based cleansers have two properties that water-based cleansers don't have:

Better fat solubility
Dissolve sunscreen, dirt, makeup, and oils faster
Gentler on skin
Won't dry out skin in the process

Frequently Asked Questions

Does double cleansing dry out skin?

No, not if you choose the right products. The key is selecting a gentle oil cleanser and a cleanser without SLS or fragrance. Good oil cleansers won't dry out your skin. If your skin feels tight after cleansing, switch products.

Can dry skin use this method?

Yes, but you need to choose very gentle products. A soothing cleansing balm like Avène or Bioderma for step one, and a creamy non-foaming cleanser for step two is ideal. Avoid cleansers containing SLS or alcohol.

Do I need to double cleanse in the morning too?

No. In the morning, a single gentle cleanse with water or light cleanser is enough. Night is when skin needs deep cleansing — after sunscreen, dirt, and likely makeup.
