Sunscreen for skin over 40

UVA rays — the ones responsible for aging — penetrate clouds, glass, and even car windows. They reach the dermis, breaking down collagen and elastin every single day. Not just at the beach. Not just in summer. Every day.

After 40, our skin already produces less collagen. The natural cell turnover slows. Pigmentation becomes more stubborn. That's the baseline. Without daily sun protection, you're accelerating every one of these processes — all while spending money on serums and treatments trying to undo the damage.

Sorme's take

If I had to choose just one product to recommend to every woman over 40, it would be SPF50 — every morning, rain or shine, before going near a window. Everything else comes after.

The good news: SPF50 blocks about 98% of UVB rays, and broad-spectrum formulas (labelled PA+++ or higher) protect against UVA too. You don't need to spend a lot. Some of the most effective sunscreens I've tested cost under €15.

What matters more than price is texture — because you'll only wear it if you like how it feels. I've gone through mineral, chemical, and hybrid formulas. For mature skin, I usually prefer a lightweight hybrid: no white cast, no greasiness, sits well under makeup.

Apply it last in your morning routine, after moisturiser. About a quarter teaspoon for the face alone. Reapply every two hours if you're outside. And yes — even on the neck and the backs of your hands.
